How To Tune a Guitar By Douglas Reach Begin to tune your guitar by getting a fixed pitch from a pitch pipe, piano or tuning fork. More often than not this will be an "A" pitch (which is the pitch of your 5th string). The 5th string is the second string from the top (the top being the string furthest from the floor). Tighten or loosen the 5th string until it sounds the same as your external pitch. It is now in tune. It is an A pitch. Then put your finger on the 5th fret of the 6th string (E). Tune your 6th string until it sounds exactly like your 5th string. Then place a finger on the 5th fret of the 5th string. Tune the 4th string (D) until it sounds like the 5th string. Then place a finger on the 5th fret of the 4th string. Tune the 3rd string (G) until it sounds like the 4th string. Then place a finger on the 4th fret of the 3rd string. Tune the 2nd string (B) until it sounds like the 3rd string. Then place a finger on the 5th fret of the 2nd string. Tune the 1st string (E) until it sounds like the 2nd string. Your guitar is now in tune.
